Innovative 1,700-square-foot home brings accessible, technology-enabled housing to Memphis and marks a milestone for local nonprofit
MEMPHIS, TN, UNITED STATES, August 13, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Intunity, a Memphis-based nonprofit dedicated to providing affordable, accessible housing for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, recently celebrated the grand opening of its first-ever custom-built Intunity home with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3160 Pershing Avenue in The Heights community in north Memphis.
The 1,700-square-foot, 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom home was specifically designed to meet the needs of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, incorporating accessibility, safety, energy efficiency and smart-home technology into a welcoming residential environment. The home was designed by LRK and constructed using volumetric modular construction by AERA Systems, an innovative approach that helped make the building process significantly more efficient.
For Intunity, the completion of the home represents more than the opening of a new residence. It is a tangible step toward a future in which adults with disabilities have the opportunity to live independently and safely in new, custom-built homes located within neighborhoods and communities.

The home includes a variety of features designed to improve accessibility and independence, including:

*Roll-in showers
*Wider hallways and turn radiuses
*Motion-sensor lighting
*Safety features integrated into appliances
*Energy-efficient systems and appliances
*Security technology and other smart-home features
“These homes are about much more than accessibility,” said InDev’s Ricky Heros, board chair of Intunity. “They are about creating opportunities for people with disabilities to be part of the communities where they live, to have greater independence and to experience the same sense of home and belonging that everyone deserves. This project demonstrates what is possible when innovative construction, thoughtful design and community commitment come together.”
The home also represents an important expansion of Intunity’s broader housing efforts. The nonprofit was recently awarded a $1 million grant from the Tennessee Department of Disability and Aging that will help Intunity provide fully accommodated homes for many additional tenants. Intunity was also awarded a Tennessee Housing Trust Fund grant in the amount of $536,974 from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency. Both of these generous grants will support the development of new homes, including three in Jackson, Tennessee, expanding access to specialized, new housing in and beyond the Memphis area.
Intunity’s model is built around the belief that adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities should have access to quality homes in typical residential neighborhoods rather than being isolated from the broader community. By creating affordable homes with features tailored to individual needs, Intunity seeks to promote independence, dignity, safety and a stronger connection to community life.
